GuestPath of Exile 2 is in a very different spot with patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients. It’s still Early Access, sure, but this update makes the game feel far less like a test build and more like a proper seasonal ARPG. The Runes of Aldur league brings a fresh economy, so players are starting clean, chasing new crafts, and thinking harder about their PoE2 Currency plans from the first few acts. If you’ve not played for a while, don’t expect to log in and understand everything in five minutes. The passive tree has changed, old characters get a free refund, and the league systems are clearly built around starting over.
Runes, remnants, and the new crafting loop
The heart of Runes of Aldur is the Remnant system. You find a Remnant in an area, place Runeshapes into its slots, and build a recipe before the fight begins. More shapes mean more waves, tougher enemies, and better reasons to take the risk. Some Remnants only have a couple of slots. Others can go much higher, and that’s where the exciting crafts start to appear. Verisium metal drops from these encounters and feeds into the league’s wider crafting tools. Farrow, the new campaign NPC, helps unlock these features step by step, so the system doesn’t all land on your head at once.Runic Ward changes how defence feels
Runic Ward is probably the mechanic players will argue about the most. It kicks in when your character reaches 1 life, then absorbs damage while it lasts. It also regenerates on its own, which gives it a different rhythm from life, armour, evasion, or energy shield. Early armour can gain Runic Ward without a drawback, while higher-level armour has to give up some normal defences to get it. That trade-off matters. It’s not just a free layer you slap onto every item. It even affects Trials of the Sekhemas, since maximum Runic Ward adds to starting Honour. The Atlas finally gets clearer goals
The endgame is no longer just a wide map with vague direction. Patch 0.5.0 resets the Atlas and adds fixed points of interest, questlines for major league mechanics, and deterministic versions of Pinnacle Bosses. The Origins of Divinity storyline sends players through Fortresses, Gates, keys, and ancient Precursor weapons. Fortress maps now grant Atlas Passive Tree points, replacing the old method, and the tree has grown past 300 nodes. Since players can eventually fill it out, respec pressure is lower. Masters of the Atlas adds another layer, with Jado, Hilda, and Doryani offering swappable bonuses between maps. Why this patch matters for returning players
Return of the Ancients also brings Martial Artist for Monk, Spirit Walker for Huntress, new supports, new uniques, loot filter updates, Trade Quick-Search, Fragment Stash Tab support, and in-game build guide files. That’s a lot, and not every detail is perfectly clear yet. Some skill lists still look inconsistent, and the build planner’s exact in-client path isn’t fully documented from the available sources. Still, the direction is easy to see: GGG wants PoE 2 to feel more structured without sanding off its edge. Players who want a smoother league start may also choose to buy cheap PoE2 Currency while learning which crafts, runes, and Atlas routes are actually worth chasing.PoE 2’s Return of the Ancients is a fresh rush: Runes of Aldur, Verisium crafting, Runic Ward, new Atlas goals, and tougher bosses.
